What archive media is available on VPI system?

VP supports virtually all types of removable backup media including DAT and DVD-RAM, but recommends DVD-RAM as the most advantageous removable medium for long-term storage. For multi-site implementations, we recommend network based storage, which allows for convenient, centralized access to information across sites.

How many archive drives are available?

Our system offers one (1) 9.4GB DVD-RAM drive as a standard solution and a second 9.4GB DVD-RAM drive as an upgrade for redundancy.

What is the capacity of the archive media in channel hours? In Gigabytes?

Each 9.4 GB unit is capable of storing over 1,250 hours of calls.

If equipped with dual archive drives, is the system capable of allowing recording to the archive media in serial mode where one drive is the primary recording drive and the other drive is in standby to act as a backup to the primary drive?

Yes, the recording system allows for archiving on removable media in serial mode. One drive is set up as a primary recording drive and the second standby drive functions as a backup to the primary drive.

Optionally, the drives may be mirrored. With such configuration, both drives produce media with identical records. Therefore, any of the two media can be moved from one drive to another.

Can either drive be designated as the primary drive?

Yes, either drive can be designated as a primary drive.

How many media (DAT, CD's, etc) are included with the system? How long will they last?

We normally supply one DVD-RAM disk with each DVD drive. Each disk records up to 800 hours of calls.

Example of the calculation of the number of media required per week:

Number of Channels Hours per channel Days per week Hours per Week
96 24 7 16,128

Per the above example, with full-time recording of 96 channels (16,128 hours weekly), you will need approximately 20 units of DVD-RAM media per week.

This is a theoretical calculation with maximization of recording time, which is virtually impossible. From a practical point of view, the above figures will be reduced by over 70%. Under these more realistic conditions, you will need about 6 units of DVD-RAM media per week.

Does the system allow for playback from the current recording media without interruption of the recording process, regardless of the system's mode of operation?

Yes, VPI's recording system does allow for playback from the current recording media without interruption of the recording process, regardless of the system's mode of operation.

Since the recording system is a true 32-bit multi-tasking, multi-threaded application, all functions including playback, recording, etc., can be performed at the same time.
